In a heart-wrenching case that shook the community of Leicester, a father named Michael Davis was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his month-old son, Ollie Davis. The infant was found lifeless in his crib back in October 2017, with a devastating “snapped neck” and more than 20 broken ribs. The medical examination revealed fractures to his skull, collar bone, arms, and limbs joints. The gruesome nature of Ollie’s injuries paints a picture of unimaginable suffering in his short life.
Michael Davis was handed a life sentence, with a minimum term of 22 years. The judge emphasized the severity of the fatal spinal injury inflicted upon Ollie, likening the trauma to that of a “high energy car crash.” Davis was deemed responsible for the series of injuries inflicted on Ollie over a timeframe of four overnight “episodes” of violence. The judge condemned Davis’s “callous indifference” for failing to seek medical help for his son, despite the evident suffering.
Ollie’s mother, Kayleigh Driver, was also convicted for causing or allowing the death of a child and causing or allowing serious physical injury. Despite being cleared of murder and grievous bodily harm charges, Driver received a seven-year prison sentence. The judge highlighted her presence in the bedroom during the assaults on Ollie, suggesting that she must have been aware of his cries for help.
Throughout the trial, evidence emerged of the extensive abuse suffered by baby Ollie. Prosecutor John Hankin KC described the multitude of injuries inflicted upon the defenseless infant, including 37 fractures to his tiny body. These fractures ranged from his skull to his limbs and were accompanied by brain injuries that ultimately led to his untimely death.
