The tension between the United States and Russia continues to escalate as the U.S. formally accused Russia of using chemical weapons against Ukrainian troops. Late Wednesday, the U.S. State Department released a statement accusing Russia of violating the Chemical Weapons Convention by using the choking agent chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces. In response to these accusations, the U.S. announced that it would be imposing more sanctions on Russian individuals and entities. This move reflects the ongoing conflict and lack of trust between the two nations.
In light of these accusations, the Kremlin’s Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov immediately rebuffed the claims when asked to comment by reporters. Peskov stated that Russia has always been committed to its obligations under international law and dismissed the accusations as unfounded. This denial by Russia further complicates the situation, as both sides continue to trade accusations without providing concrete evidence to support their claims.
Chloropicrin, the chemical agent in question, was previously used as a poison gas during World War I. Although it is no longer authorized for military use, it is still used in agriculture as an insecticide. The “choking agent” primarily affects the respiratory tract, causing irritation to the nose, throat, and lungs. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons states that when inhaled, these agents cause fluid to be secreted in the air sacs of the lungs, essentially drowning those affected. The use of such chemicals in warfare is strictly prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has seen accusations from both sides regarding the use of chemical weapons. In February, Ukraine accused Russia of using chemical weapons in over 200 attacks on the battlefield in a single month. Russia, in turn, denied these allegations and accused Ukraine of using chemical weapons. The lack of evidence to support these claims has only fueled the ongoing conflict and further strained relations between the two nations.
The Chemical Weapons Convention, which has been in effect since 1997, aims to outlaw the production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons. Both Russia and the U.S. are signatories to this global treaty, which requires countries to declare their stocks of banned chemical weapons and facilities, and work towards their destruction. The U.S. has criticized Russia for its “ongoing disregard” for its obligations under the CWC, citing the use of chemical weapons as evidence of this disregard.
