The Dangers of Unregulated Practices in the Beauty Industry

In the beauty industry, it is crucial for businesses to adhere to strict regulations and guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of their clients. A prime example of what can go wrong when these regulations are not followed is the case of a day spa in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where unregulated ‘vampire facials’ led to a health crisis. The spa was shut down following a state health department investigation, and now, nearly six years later, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified five cases of HIV linked to the unsanitary procedures carried out at the spa.

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) launched an investigation in 2018 after a woman tested positive for HIV following a facial procedure at the unlicensed spa. This investigation ultimately uncovered a series of alarming practices at the spa, including storing blood and injectables in a kitchen refrigerator alongside food, as well as using unwrapped syringes and lacking a proper sterilizing system. Not only were these practices unsanitary, but they also put clients at risk of serious infections.

One of the most concerning aspects of this case is the fact that the spa’s owner was not licensed to perform the procedures being offered. In the United States, practitioners are required to have a medical license to draw and separate blood and re-inject platelet-rich plasma. By operating without the necessary licenses, the spa owner not only put clients at risk of infection but also made it difficult for health officials to trace the source of the outbreak and assess the full extent of the damage.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of strict regulation in the beauty industry. Businesses that provide invasive treatments must adhere to guidelines to protect the health and safety of their clients. Maintaining accurate client records is essential for conducting contact tracing in the event of an outbreak, as demonstrated by the NMDOH’s need to test all 198 clients of the spa to determine the scope of the issue.

The case of the Albuquerque day spa highlights the dangers of unregulated practices in the beauty industry. Without proper oversight and adherence to regulations, clients are put at risk of serious harm. It is essential for businesses to follow guidelines, maintain accurate records, and ensure that practitioners have the necessary licenses to perform procedures safely. By prioritizing safety and compliance, the beauty industry can protect both clients and practitioners from preventable health risks.
