A devastating tornado outbreak was reported on Friday, with a preliminary total of 79 tornadoes wreaking havoc across six states. The majority of the tornadoes occurred in Nebraska and Iowa, resulting in a trail of destruction. Homes were leveled, buildings collapsed, and residents were left in shock as they witnessed the aftermath of the destructive tornadoes.
In Omaha, Nebraska, Mayor Jean Stothert provided updates on the situation through a Facebook post. Thankfully, there were no reported deaths, although a few minor injuries were reported. The destructive tornado first moved through rural farmland before hitting the suburbs, causing extensive damage to hundreds of homes, especially in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city. Police and firefighters worked tirelessly, going door-to-door to assist residents and search for anyone who may be trapped in the debris.
Residents like Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn, described the harrowing experience of taking shelter during the tornado. “When we came up, our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood’s gone,” he recounted. His wife, Kim Woods, added that the neighborhood to the north of them was “pretty flattened,” highlighting the widespread devastation caused by the tornado.
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds declared a disaster emergency for Pottawattamie County after witnessing the level of destruction in towns like Minden, located about 30 miles northeast of Omaha, Nebraska. Video footage shared on social media depicted parts of the town completely flattened, with Chief Deputy Jeff Theulen stating that 40 to 50 homes were “completely destroyed.” While there were reports of injuries, fortunately, none were life-threatening. The town was placed under strict restrictions, with access limited to residents only due to the dangerous conditions.
Shelby County was another area that suffered significant damage, with around 40 homes being affected. County emergency coordinator Alex Londo mentioned that there were no reports of fatalities, offering a glimmer of hope amid the devastation. Emergency officials were in the process of assessing the destruction, with National Weather Service offices conducting surveys to understand the extent of the damage ahead of potential severe weather forecasts for the following days.
The National Weather Service issued warnings for over 30 million people residing in areas like Oklahoma City, Dallas, Wichita, Omaha, Milwaukee, and Madison, alerting them of the impending severe weather. Northwestern Texas and western Oklahoma were placed under tornado watches, as the agency’s Storm Prediction Center forecasted numerous strong to severe thunderstorms over parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and North Texas. The anticipation of more severe weather added to the concerns of residents already grappling with the aftermath of the tornado outbreak.
