The recent agreement by the United States Justice Department to pay approximately $100 million to victims of former Team USA doctor Larry Nassar sheds light on the FBI’s failures to properly investigate reports of Nassar’s sexual assaults against America’s top gymnasts. This settlement, if finalized, would bring the total amount of settlements in the cases against Nassar close to $1 billion.
The FBI’s mishandling of the Nassar case is well-documented, with FBI director Christopher Wray apologizing to survivors of Nassar’s abuse in 2021. This acknowledgment of their failure to act in 2015 when they had the opportunity to stop Nassar was deemed “inexcusable”. Despite serious allegations and the potential continuation of Nassar’s misconduct, senior officials within the FBI Indianapolis Field Office did not respond with the required seriousness and urgency.
An internal investigation conducted in the summer of 2015 by officials from USA Gymnastics revealed that three Team USA gymnasts had reported being sexually assaulted by Nassar. However, field agents within the FBI’s Indianapolis office failed to take any investigative action for five weeks. Subsequently, they neglected to transfer the matter to the Lansing field office where Nassar was still treating patients.
The Office of Inspector General’s report concluded that, following one interview in September 2015, the FBI failed to conduct any further investigative activity for over eight months. During this period, Nassar’s abuse continued, affecting approximately 100 women. The emotional testimonies of former Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, and Maggie Nichols highlighted the human cost of the FBI’s negligence. The failure to act resulted in a child molester going free for over a year, as expressed by the survivors.
