Celebrating the Winners of the 2024 Writers Guild Awards

The 2024 Writers Guild Awards were a night of celebration and recognition for outstanding achievements in film and television. The event, which was delayed due to an industry-wide strike, took place in Los Angeles and New York simultaneously. The big winners of the night included Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, both of which received top honors in their respective categories. Cord Jefferson, who also received the prestigious WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award, had previously won an Oscar for Adapted Screenplay, making him a standout in this year’s awards season.

One of the surprises of the night was Payne’s win for The Holdovers, which marked a moment of revenge for the filmmaker after losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall. However, it’s worth noting that Triet and Harari’s script was ineligible for a Writers Guild Award due to the guild’s strict guidelines on eligibility. The WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries. Despite this, Payne’s victory was a significant achievement.

The awards ceremony also saw recognition for talent across various genres and mediums. Errol Morris took home the Documentary prize for his film The Pigeon Tunnel, showcasing the depth and breadth of storytelling in non-fiction filmmaking. On the small screen, series like HBO’s Succession, FX’s The Bear, and Netflix’s Beef swept their respective categories, solidifying their place in the television landscape. From Drama Series to Limited Series, the Writers Guild Awards honored a diverse array of talent and storytelling.

In addition to the awards given out for film and television, the Writers Guild ceremony also included a lineup of honors and tributes. The WGA East’s Richard B. Jablow Award was presented to the members and leadership of IATSE, the Teamsters, SAG-AFTRA, and American Federation of Musicians for their support and sacrifice during the industry strike. Individual honorees included Philadelphia scribe Ron Nyswaner, Wanda Sykes, and Tony Gilroy, each recognized for their contributions to the entertainment industry.

The 2024 Writers Guild Awards were a celebration of excellence in writing across film and television. From groundbreaking screenplays to critically acclaimed series, the winners of the night represented the best and brightest in the industry. As the WGA continues to champion the art of storytelling, events like these serve as a reminder of the power of words and the impact they have on audiences around the world.
